Bulletin #1

The Utö Island is situated farthest out in the southern part of the Stockholm archipelago and is renowned for its many hours of sunshine. However the weather is unpredictable so be prepared for both sunny weather and rain.

The island is essentially free from cars and offers many outdoor activities. You can, for example, rent a bike, paddle a canoe and play tennis, miniature golf, beach volleyball or boule. Pack a picnic basket and discover on your own the cliffs, beaches and beautiful nature of Utö. Also discover the unique geology of the island. The oldest iron mines in Sweden are located a short distance from the conference venue. Mining started on Utö in the 12th century. Today there are traces of the mining era in the deep water filled mine holes, the big piles of mine tailings. From the Dutch style windmill, built in 1791, you’ll have the best view of Utö.

On a short walking distance from the Gruvbyn (“Mine Village”) harbour is the conference venue Utö Värdshus which is know for its gourmet restaurant. The lodging will be in cottages that are located between the harbour and Utö Värdshus. There are two bedrooms (one with single bed and one with double bed), a living room and a bathroom in each cottage. There are a few shops, a bakery, a post office, restaurants and bars in the village.

At registration one can choose between full and half board. Half board does not include lunches but one can visit the restaurants or bars in the village. Full board includes all meals and they are served at the outstanding restaurant at Utö Värdshus. There will be an outing on Wednesday 30th July. For that good boots and comfortable clothing is desirable.
